Directions to Norwich and Hanover

TO DARTMOUTH BY CAR

From Boston or Manchester (about 2.5 hours)

  • Take I-93 north to I-89 north at Concord, NH. Get off I-89 at Exit 18 in Lebanon, NH onto Route 120. (A sign says that it is the exit for Dartmouth College.) At Exit 18, bear right off the exit, heading north on Rt.120 into Hanover. 4.1 miles from the exit, Rt. 120 forks at a traffic light. Bear right at the fork, following Rt. 120 one-half mile on South Park Street to the second traffic light. Turn left at the light, onto East Wheelock Street. Follow East Wheelock for 2/10 of a mile. You will come to the Hopkins Center (left) and the Dartmouth Green (right).
  • (But you can also continue north on I-89 to the intersection of I-89 and I-91 in White River Junction, VT, and take I-91-North to exit 13 in Norwich;  from that exit, either turn left into Norwich or bear right across the river to Hanover.)

From Burlington, VT (about 1.5 hours)

  • Take I-89 south to I-91 north in White River Junction, VT. Take I-91-North to exit 13 in Norwich; from the exit you can either turn left into Norwich or bear right across the river to Hanover.

From New York (about 5 hours)

  • There are many ways out of the city to Hartford, but you will want to get on I-91 at or before Hartford. (One of the pleasanter routes, for its lack of commercial traffic, is to take the Hutchinson River Parkway, which becomes the Merritt Parkway, which becomes CT-15, which meets I-91 south of Hartford.) Take I-91-North to exit 13 in Norwich; from the exit you can either turn left into Norwich or bear right across the river to Hanover.

From Albany (about 3 hours) or Points West

  • Take I-87-North to Exit 20. At the end of the exit ramp, there is a traffic light; take a left onto Route 9-North for ½ mile, and then a right onto Route 149 East. Take 149 East about 12 miles to Fort Anne, turning left at the light in the center of town onto Route 4-North, which you will follow all the way to I-89 in Vermont.
  • Drive through Whitehall into Vermont, at which point Route 4 turns into a four-lane highway until it gets to Rutland, about 36 miles from Fort Anne. Take a left at the light at the intersection with Route 7-North, and follow it a little over 2 miles to a clearly marked junction where Route 4 splits off again to the east. Take a right onto Route 4 East and follow it about 30 miles through  Woodstock and Quechee to I-89-South, and take I-89-South. Take I-91-North to exit 13 in Norwich; from the exit you can either turn left into Norwich or bear right across the river to Hanover.
